Courses with a community-engaged learning component can be found across all academic disciplines at 91Âé¶¹¾«Æ·. Some courses may fulfill requirements of the Core Curriculum, while others may count toward major or minor requirements.

Arts and Sciences

  • COMM 472: PR Research & Planning - Melissa Greco Lopes
    Students will conduct focus groups and interviews to create a media relations plan. They will also reach out to media agencies and develop content for social media.
  • CORE 4990-15: Writing Church History - Anthony Siracusa
    Students will partner with church members to write the history of a local church.
  • ENGL 2121: Bridges Across Divides - Fionnuala Regan
    Students will engage in dialogues about cultural experiences and personal narratives to build community connections and raise awareness.
  • ENGL 2263: The Image and the Word - Emily Lowman
    Students will produce informational materials for community initiatives to improve media, technology, health, and AI literacy.
  • HIST 296: History of Rochester - Carolyn Vacca
    Students will conduct research and collect oral histories.
  • HIST 2100: Activism in Rochester - Anthony Siracusa
    Students will learn how to engage in organizing and advocacy, and will work with partners to help advance public policy priorities.
  • HNRS 2599: Topics in Bridging Communities - Barbara Lowe
    Students will work with an archived collection to create documents that help inform and engage the community about a public memorial garden.

    Students will engage with elementary students on a project that demonstrates how Spanish forms connections in the community.
  • SOCI 2111: Aging & Life Courses - Marta Rodríguez-Galán
    Students will pair with elders, conduct a series of interviews, and produce a story on the elder's experience.
  • SOCI 2325: Groups and Diversity - Jebaroja Singh
    Students will engage in dialogues with youth immigrants and refugees to form connections and a collective understanding of the community.

Business

  • MKTG 325: Promotion Management – Ron Sicker
    Students will develop a promotion plan for clients considering target markets and implementation strategies.
  • MKTG 327: Buyer Behavior – Amy Valente
    Students will provide recommendations to local retailers after conducting research and on-site analysis of the businesses.

Education

  • EDUC 424: Education for Social Justice - Kristen Driskill
    Students will apply their understanding of social justice and social action within classrooms, schools, and other learning communities.
  • EDUC 471: Management in Inclusive, Collaborative Classroom Communities - Katrina Arndt & RJ Chesterton
    Students will research and present on parent-identified life skills and growth opportunities for children with exceptional needs.

Nursing

  • NURS 301: Population Health & Wellness I – Liz Dollinger & Joy Hogan
    Students will support local community health organizations that are experiencing high volunteer need.
  • NURS 312: Palliative and End of Life Care – Joy Hogan & Alida Merrill
    Students will provide caregiving support as hospice aides for comfort care homes.
  • NURS 429: Population Health/Community Nursing – Liz Dollinger, Joy Hogan & Nicole Stagnitta
    Students will apply social determinants of community health principles to health promotion, education, and research.
